Letter From the Editor: Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future
As we celebrate Black History Month, we’re honoring the lasting impact Black artists and educators have had on the dance world. Our History column takes a closer look at several Black artists whose contributions continue to influence how we teach—and this month, we’re highlighting John Bubbles, who is widely considered the pioneer of rhythm tap.
You’ll also find inspiring stories on Black-owned organizations that are exemplifying access, adaptability, and community impact—including Above Ballet Company, which is elevating ballet training in Nigeria, and Second Chance Dance, a studio in Philadelphia dedicated to fostering a supportive space for new and returning adult dancers.
Later this month in our Lesson Plan column, Irene Hogarth-Cimino, principal faculty member at Joffrey Ballet School in New York City, teaches a glissade-assemblé exercise. You’ll also hear from experts in the field about building student confidence and strengthening the skills needed to improve turns.
Finally, please take a moment to consider who you’d like to nominate for a 2026 Dance Teacher Award. The deadline for entries is Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
With excitement,
Reanne Rodrigues
