Breaking at the Olympics. It’s what everyone in the dance world is talking about now. And we’re pretty sure your dance students will be inspired by the gravity-defying leaps and spin moves they’ll see on screen.
But while it’s great for dancers to find motivation in the Olympians, it’s also important to make sure that they approach similar stunts with care and consideration—and with the appropriate technique. So in this month’s Technique & Artistry column we’re focusing on suspension, and how you can keep both the physical and mental safety of your students in mind.
You’ll also want to mark your calendar for our upcoming DT+ Teacher Talk, “Navigating Continuing Education and Professional Development,” with Deborah Damast and Nancy Lushington, on Thursday, August 15, at 12 pm EDT.
In this live hour-long Zoom session, we’ll be discussing higher education opportunities for dance educators pursuing ongoing professional development. You’ll receive professional advice on everything from choosing the right degree/program to budgeting and managing finances, navigating career trajectories in dance education, advising students looking to pursue teaching dance as a profession, and more. And, you’ll also be able to ask questions in real time.
Later this month in our Lesson Plan column, renowned tap artist Aaron Tolson teaches “The Gracie” (a new step inspired by a student), which consists of an intricate pattern of heels and toes that tests speed, clarity, and timing on both the right and left sides.
And because we’re only a few weeks away from our official start to the school year, we’re bringing you some icebreaker ideas from some of the best names in the business in our K–12 column.
With excitement,
Reanne Rodrigues
