We’re incredibly saddened to report that Doug Caldwell, one of the dance world’s most vibrant teachers, has passed away. Caldwell was a mainstay on the convention circuit (with Tremaine Dance Conventions for 24 years alone) and a master of many techniques, including lyrical and jazz. His career as a dancer included working on films such as Stayin’ Alive and A Chorus Line, and with stars like Rita Moreno and Sammy Davis Jr.
Here’s a short video of him dancing at our Dance Teacher Summit only last week, courtesy of a student’s Facebook:

Caldwell’s love of dance was equaled only by his passion for living. (Only two weeks ago, I watched him grand battement so high he kicked his head!) He’s been a teacher to many, including Suzi Taylor and Sue Sampson-Dalena. Read his sage advice on choreographing to music with lyrics and editing in the moment here.
Please share any special moments or stories you have of him! The dance community will certainly mourn his absence.
