Watch DT+ Teacher Talk: “Choreographing Squeaky-Clean Dance Team Routines”
April 29, 2025

Watch this hour-long conversation featuring TRIBE 99 founder and CEO Carsen Rowe, and J’aime Griffith, a professor at Grambling State University and the director of the school’s dance line, the Orchesis Dance Company, to discover the sure-fire ways you can make dance choreography compelling, innovative, and clean.

Pro Tip from Carsen Rowe

Know the importance of layering. This provides the ability to move groups around on the stage at different times. When you’re seeking to create clean routines, those layers and groups can sometimes begin to conflict with each other. As a choreographer, you need to make sure you’re pulling the judges’ focus exactly where you want it to go. Sometimes your layers may be blurring the vision. Make sure you have clean groups and clean things to look at. There shouldn’t be too much on the stage at the same time

Pro Tip from J’aime Griffith

Keep your formations symmetrical. You have to have a “twin” on the other side. And remember to focus on smoothing out the transitions.
