Video of the Month: Rehearsing Remotely

Kearns coaching a young student

Congratulations to Bridey Kearns, the latest Editors’ Choice winner for the Dance Teacher Video of the Month!

An instructor of children’s ballet, tap, jazz, musical theater, Irish step dancing, acro and tumbling at Competitive Edge Dance Studio in Cape Coral, Florida, Kearns uses videos as rehearsal tools for students. She also encourages parents of her youngest competition dancers to come in and tape combinations. “Oftentimes parents have their children practice at home, but they’re not 100 percent sure of the timing, and the children aren’t very reliable, especially if they’re just learning it. Incorrect practice is almost worse than no practice at all. But when parents have it on tape, it’s easier for them to guide the child.”

When eighth-grader Ashley Dale (featured in the video) asked Kearns to choreograph an audition solo for her application to a performing arts high school, Kearns filmed the two of them during their first rehearsal. Dale was able to look back on the footage as she prepared. She nailed the audition and got into the program.
