What My Teacher Taught Me: Sara Webb

Sara Webb in Madame Butterfly with Ian Casady

During her first six seasons with Houston Ballet, principal Sara Webb worked closely with former artistic director Ben Stevenson, who helped her find clarity in acting roles.

“He used to always tell us that you have to know what you’re saying before you say it. If you can’t say it in your mind while you’re dancing it, the audience isn’t going to understand it. And then if it wasn’t reading properly, he’d say, ‘Let’s discuss that, because what you’re trying to say, I’m not understanding.’ That’s always helped me.”

See Webb perform the title role in Houston Ballet’s Madame Butterfly September 22–October 2 at the Wortham Theater Center.
