Letter From the Editor: Come Cheer On Your Fellow Dance Educators
August 3, 2023

Dear DT+ Community,

We all have a special place in our hearts for the dance teacher who opened our eyes to the joy of dance and inspired us to become educators ourselves. Here at Dance Teacher, we’ve made it our mission to give these role models the recognition they deserve by celebrating them at our much-loved annual Dance Teacher Awards

You’re invited to join us as we honor five extraordinary educators—Ana Marie Forsythe (Awardee of Distinction), Sheila Barker, Hilary Cartwright, Irene Dowd, and Caridad Martinez—at this year’s ceremony, which will be taking place on August 10 at the Sheen Center for Thought & Culture in New York City. The event starts at 6 pm and is followed by a cocktail party. Tickets are available for purchase here, and DT+ members can use event code YQ7Z3297 for $20 off.

Meanwhile, our content vault on DT+ only keeps growing. This month, we’re sharing tips on welcoming new young students as well as teenage and adult late starters in dance, as your studio ramps up for the back-to-school crowd. You’ll also learn how three studio owners navigate uncomfortable or sensitive requests from parents—a key skill that’ll help set you up for success this school year. And registered dietitian Rachel Fine shares healthy snack ideas that’ll get you fired up for a hectic fall schedule.

In our Studio Owners Spotlight column, we’re highlighting the Dance Institute of Washington for promoting equity and representation by providing more opportunities for dancers of diverse backgrounds. And Daria Fitzgerald of the 92nd Street Y in New York City will share her advice for working in early childhood and her love for integrating books into dance classes.

Plus, you’ll enjoy in-depth profiles of established artists in the dance world. The University of Utah’s Jay (Jong Hoon) Kim reveals his favorite teaching tools, popular dancer Lauren Gottlieb shares why Kevin and Meri Bender have been the greatest influences in her career, and Reed Tankersley offers his rehearsal tips and advice for up-and-comers.

We have plenty more coming your way this month, from lesson plans to playlists and teaching tips, so stay tuned. And don’t forget to reserve your seat for the Dance Teacher Awards now—we hope to see you there!

With excitement,
Reanne Rodrigues
