In this live hour-long Zoom discussion, Dance Teacher’s editorial director, Reanne Rodrigues, joins experienced somatic dance practitioners Adele Nickel and Ami Shulman to discuss how somatic practices can bolster students’ mind–body connection, deepen their self-awareness, and elevate their learning experiences. Attendees will receive useful somatic-based movement exercises that can be implemented in dance class, and will also be able to ask questions in real time.

About Adele Nickel

Nickel is an assistant professor at Sam Houston State University, where she teaches dance technique, composition, somatics, and embodied anatomy, and is currently developing a somatics minor for her college. She’s enjoyed a 15-year performing career in New York City, where she was a longtime company member of the Bessie-nominated Liz Gerring Dance Company and has danced with Annie-B Parson, Sarah Michelson, and Patrick Corbin, among others. Nickel completed her 1,600-hour Alexander Technique teacher certification and trained extensively in Body-Mind Centering and Bartenieff Fundamentals. She has since taught somatics on faculty at Movement Research and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and has offered master classes in somatically informed dance technique across the country. Her article on the application of Polyvagal Theory to dance pedagogy was just published in the Journal of Dance Education special edition on trauma-informed teaching. Adele maintains a private Alexander Technique teaching practice in Houston, Texas, and is currently studying to become a craniosacral therapist. About Ami Shulman

Shulman is an internationally distinguished movement artist. She is a creator, mentor, artistic advisor, rehearsal director, educator, and certified Feldenkrais Practitioner. She has choreographed for the National Theatre of London and theShakespeare Theatre Company, and has assisted creations with the Cirque du Soleil, the National Ballet of Canada, and Ballet BC. She has taught throughout Europe, Canada, and the U.S., including for Nederlands Dans Theater, Venice Biennale, the Juilliard School, Jacob’s Pillow, National Theatre School of Canada, BANFF Centre for the Arts, and b12, among others. Shulman was also the rehearsal director for the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani in Sweden and is an artistic associate of the Springboard Project.
