This After-School Dance Program Makes Math Accessible—and Cool

MIT graduate and dancer Kirin Sinha is using movement to teach math to middle school girls. She created the after-school program SHINE, not only to help students understand concepts—using movement games and building shapes with the body—but to change their attitudes toward being females in math class. “A lot of times, in math classrooms, you don’t want to be the girl who stands out,” she told CNN. “[But] what I got from dance was the exact opposite mentality. You want to be the girl in the spotlight, you want to work as hard as you can and practice as much as you can so you are noticed.” Watch these dancers’ kinesthetic learning in action:
