Night of Outstanding Choreography
November 29, 2001

Last night at the Dance Teacher Summit, a panel of judges (including Dance Spirit’s Editor in Chief, Kate Lydon) had the difficult task of choosing one emerging choreographer to win the Capezio A.C.E Award for Choreographic Excellence, out of 16 amazing finalists. Taking home the gold was Travis Wall, for his piece, “Long Walk.” Wall was awarded a $15,000 production budget towards his own show in a New York City theater. Two runner-up choreographers were also awarded $3,000-$5,000 production budgets for a joint show. Furthermore, the production costs and theater rental costs for both shows will be paid for by the Dance Teacher Summit.

While the choreography in the competition was fantastic, the dancers who performed in the 16 pieces were the highlight of the evening. Dancers—both students and professionals from across the country—were extremely dynamic, powerful, and technically proficient, and they really presented the choreography in the best light possible.
