From Laps to Leaps
November 29, 2001

I recently came across an article online that reported that the swimming pool at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee was in the process of being filled in with cement. Why, you ask. To make room for the school’s expanding dance program! How cool is that?

Once the alternating layers of gravel and rock are set, the space will be covered with a biopad and two layers of filler board and topped with a the maplewood floor. The new dance studio will measure about 7,000 square feet and will be able to divide into separate spaces with the help of portable walls.

Marcus Hayes, assistant professor of dance and theater told The Leaf Chronicle, that the school’s dance program has shown exciting growth. “Currently, we are space locked,” he said. Hayes estimates that about 250 to 300 students are taking dance this semester and added that, “This will change and help to define the program, which I now expect to grow by leaps and bounds.”
