The American Dance Guild Opens Its Treasure Trove of Historic Dances From the New Dance Group
January 25, 2022

The American Dance Guild’s 2022 Online Festival, which runs from Monday, January 31, through Sunday, February 27, presents 18 historic modern dances from the New Dance Group—offering you and your students a unique opportunity to engage with enlightening, rarely seen dance works and delve deep into the rich heritage and diverse subject matter of modern dance.

Four successive programs, which are set to run separately each week, spotlight a rich collection of works created by celebrated artists of the legendary New Dance Group Studio. The pieces were produced and recorded by ADG at The New Dance Group Gala Retrospective Performance on July 11, 1993. Featured choreographers include Mary Anthony, Ronne Aul, Talley Beatty, Valerie Bettis, Irving Burton, Jane Dudley, Jean Erdman, Eve Gentry, Joseph Gifford, Sophie Maslow, Donald McKayle, Daniel Nagrin, Pearl Primus, Anna Sokolow, Joyce Trisler and Charles Weidman.

Whether you’d like to incorporate these archival videos as part of a class lecture or research project, your students will enjoy being able to rediscover and explore the powerful social consciousness embodied in these distinct, expressive pieces that resonate just as much today as they did almost 40 years ago.

All showings are free via Vimeo and the ADG website, and donations are welcome. To make a donation, please click on “Donate” in the upper-right corner of ADG’s website. For more information on the festival and the full streaming lineup, click here.
