For Mac (free) and iOS ($4.99 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch)

Few songs come recital-ready or pre-packaged for strict competition time limits—which means there’s some serious editing required. Apple’s GarageBand was originally developed to function as a virtual studio for music creation, but its easy-to-use editing tools make it a great choice for DIY studio owners and teachers. You can cut or fade out a song to make it a certain length, edit out inappropriate language, add desired effects, loop a particular section, blend two pieces of music together and even add or layer in spoken text. You can export and share any new or edited pieces of music with your staff or the sound engineer for your end-of-year show.
