What My Teacher Taught Me: Craig Salstein

For years, American Ballet Theatre soloist Craig Salstein took daily ballet classes with the late David Howard at Steps on Broadway. Howard taught him the importance of having a strong command of language.

“He was the Shakespeare of teaching ballet linguistically. He was an unparalleled master of putting words together with the music so you would have this easy way of hearing the language. The way he formulated a sentence made you understand exactly what you needed to do. It had an easy entrance into your psyche. ”

Craig Salstein dances in Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free at the Hollywood Bowl in California on Tuesday, September 1, at 8 pm.
