Register now for our next DT+ Teacher Talk, “Navigating Continuing Education and Professional Development,” With Deborah Damast and Nancy Lushington, on Thursday, August 15, at 12 pm EDT. 

In this live hour-long Zoom discussion, Dance Teacher’s editorial director, Reanne Rodrigues, joins Deborah Damast, associate professor and director of dance education at NYU Steinhardt, and Nancy Lushington, associate professor of dance at Marymount Manhattan College, to discuss higher education opportunities for dance educators pursuing ongoing professional development.

Attendees will receive professional advice on choosing the right degree/program, budgeting and managing finances, navigating career trajectories in dance education, advising students looking to pursue teaching dance as a profession, and more. Attendees will also be able to ask questions in real time.

About Deborah Damast

Deborah Damast is the associate professor and director of dance education at NYU Steinhardt, where, in addition to teaching, she directs the Concerts, the Kaleidoscope Dancers, and the Uganda study abroad program. She has served on the boards of the New York State Dance Education Association and the National Dance Education Organization, and she currently serves on boards for Dance Teacher magazine, Dance Education in Practice, Peridance, and Misty Copeland’s BE BOLD. Her choreography has been shown at over 40 venues in New York City, including Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and Radio City Music Hall, and internationally in Japan, Uganda, South Korea, Italy, and Canada. Deborah is a recipient of the NYU Graduate Student Organization Star Faculty Award, NDEO Outstanding Dance Educator Award, Steinhardt Teaching Excellence Award, Dance Teacher Award, NYSDEA Outstanding Leadership Award, and the Martha Hill Mid-Career Award.

About Nancy Lushington

Nancy Lushington graduated with honors from Adelphi University. She danced with the May O’Donnell Concert Dance Company, as a soloist, and with the Joyce Trisler Danscompany, as well as in Leonard Bernstein’s Mass at the Kennedy Center, amongst many other professional engagements. She has choreographed over 30 works for colleges, universities, and regional companies and has taught internationally, in Cyprus, Austria, Spain, England, and at Bolzano Danza in Italy, and in the U.S., at Adelphi University, Montclair State University, and the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. She is currently an associate professor of dance at Marymount Manhattan College, where she teaches technique and pedagogy.
