Speaking of pointe shoes—have you read DT’s “Prepared for Pointe?” article?

I love to tell whoever will listen that there’s no problem a library card can’t solve. But the New York Public Library goes above and beyond a good selection of books. This month, the Performing Arts branch of NYPL has three dance-related events. And all of them sound like don’t-miss material! If you’re in town and have some free time, consider attending any of these dance-tastic happenings:

• Saturday, December 6, 10:30 am: On Pointe: Brunch with the New York City Ballet Shoe Supervisor Dara Faust will discuss how she manages and organizes the hundreds (thousands?) of pointe shoes at NYCB. There’ll even be a live pointe shoe fitting! It all happens tableside at the Library for Performing Arts Café.

• Monday, December 8, 6 pm: Swan Lake: A Discussion with Alastair Macaulay, Robert Greskovic and David Vaughan Listen to two dance critics and one dance historian discuss the ballet Swan Lake and its many iterations. You’ll see vintage video and photography, courtesy of the Dance Division’s staggering collection.

• Wednesday, December 31, 1 pm: The Dance Historian Is In with David Vaughan: La Mort du Cygne (1937) Okay, so it’s happening on New Year’s Eve. But how many opportunities will you have to see La Mort du Cygne, starring ballerinas as swoon-worthy as Mia Slavenska?
