Ask Deb: What Stretches Are Good to Do When You're Pregnant?
February 14, 2018

I recently found out that I’m expecting my first child. I plan to continue teaching, but I will modify the amount I do as I progress. Do you have any suggestions for stretches I should definitely do while pregnant?

Congratulations! Having gone through three pregnancies (and loving being pregnant) I do have a few suggestions. The first is to keep stretching your iliopsoas muscles throughout pregnancy. This should help keep lower back problems at bay. Try doing a modified runners lunge standing or sitting in a chair.

The other suggestion I have is to do regular release work with a pinkie ball against the wall, paying special attention to the outside of the pelvis. This will help release the muscle tightness that often occurs with the slight widening of the pelvis that happens during pregnancy.

Warmest wishes for a glorious pregnancy and an easy birth! To your success,
