How to Bring in Guest Faculty for Summer Intensives Without Breaking the Bank
May 15, 2018

Q: Every year I struggle to bring in guest faculty for my summer intensive without breaking the bank. Do you have any suggestions?

A: Summer intensive faculty can be a huge investment. I’ve recently had guest teachers quote me rates as high as $1,500 per hour, plus the cost of airfare, food and a hotel. I don’t know about you, but that rate is more than I make in a week! We all want to give our students the best training opportunities possible, but we can’t all afford the high cost.

To solve this problem in the past, I’ve teamed up with three other studios within a 45-minute radius of mine to hold a bigger, three-day summer intensive. We hold the workshop at whichever studio has the largest dance floor to accommodate the large number of students. By doing this, we can afford to bring in a big-name artist, as well as a few up-and-comers and some local talent to make it a great experience.

If combining your intensive with other studios’ is not an option for you, look for local talent who might be more affordable. I find these young teachers are excited for the opportunity and do a great job.
