Extraordinary dance teachers do more than teach steps. They shape the way dancers move through the world, cultivating curiosity, confidence, and a lasting love of the art form.
This year, our awards selection committee is proud to recognize five educators who represent distinct approaches to teaching—spanning generations, styles, and traditions—and whose influence extends far beyond the studio.
- Jacqulyn Buglisi, founder of Buglisi Dance Theatre, who danced under Martha Graham and draws on imagery and poetry to connect technique with humanity, empowering dancers to reach their fullest potential.
- Archie Burnett, a celebrated educator, performer, and grandfather of the House of Ninja whose decades-long career focuses on sharing the art of voguing with students worldwide.
- Zvi Gotheiner, a longtime teacher at New York City Center who inspires his students to trust themselves, allowing them to discover freedom in their movement.
- Sheela Ramanath, artistic director and founder of Kalavaridhi Center for Performing Arts, who carries forward bharatanatyam traditions while inspiring her students through artistry, cultural connection, and service.
- Lynn Simonson, creator of Simonson Technique and founder of Better Brain & Balance, who transformed jazz dance pedagogy, helping train generations of dancers worldwide while later creating inclusive programs for seniors.
