- Program Description: Northwestern University, led by faculty member Billy Siegenfeld and company members of Jump Rhythm Jazz Project, presents a one-week immersion in the theory and practice of Jump Rhythm Technique. JRT offers a uniquely universal approach to movement learning that focuses on using rhythm as the foundation of all exercises, combinations and choreography. The primary goal is full-bodied rhythm-making by learning how to transform the moving body—accompanied by the scat-singing voice—into an explosively energetic, rhythmically precise percussion instrument. JRT promotes artistic growth in dancing that is musically accurate, richly energetic across a broad range of dynamics (from the explosively accentual to the coolly swinging) and acutely sensitive to the give-and-take of body weight in all forms of hand-initiated, rhythmic partner dancing. All technical work honors the laws of nature and is built around the body alignment concept called Standing Down Straight. SDS promotes efficient body mechanics and moving with high energy from a base of gravity-aligned relaxation to ensure longevity in dancing.

These comprise the elementary work that emphasizes: the basic stance, turnout, épaulement, port de bras, organization of class exercises and the systematic progression of steps from simple to complex. Finally, there will be an analysis of the underlying logic of the method and why it has produced so many outstanding dancers. The course will be conducted in seminar form and is designed to help established teachers and aspiring novices apply sound methodology to their individual teaching situations. Experienced teachers will gain greater insights into teaching methodology and theory, while novices will learn the importance of a systematic approach to teaching. The knowledge gained will enable all teachers to work with their students with greater awareness and confidence. White has taught more than 600 teachers to date and is considered an authority on the Vaganova method.
