Ballet Music: For Barre & Center Floor Technique

by Kathryn Sullivan and Eugenia Lev

In a nutshell: Piano music for various levels of ballet instruction

Mindful of the ballet teacher who instructs a range of levels, Kathryn Sullivan and pianist Eugenia Lev have assembled a collection of classics for barre and center work. Sullivan, who has taught at Broadway Dance Center, La Guardia High School of the Performing Arts, New Jersey Ballet and the New York City Ballet Education Department, has a longstanding partnership with Lev, who accompanies many of her classes. This 30-track album includes some of ballet’s greatest musical wonders, such as rare works from August Bournonville’s Napoli, Hungarian folk selections by Shostakovich and whimsical pieces by Debussy. This pastiche ranges from easy-to-count folk tunes to complex classical selections. Each track is labeled with a suggested movement and separated into categories (barre work, and elementary, intermediate and advanced center floor), making this CD an ideal choice for teachers who run from class to class––from pre-ballet to pre-professional—throughout the day.
