Do's and Don'ts for Nationals

By jlaufer

1. Do polish and fine-tune pieces, paying attention to judges’ comments.

Don’t try to fix what there isn’t time to fix.

2. Do spice up stale routines.

Don’t change choreography drastically for Nationals.

Don’t add steps that don’t fit the choreography just because everyone else has been doing them at Regionals.

3. Do keep students focused and inspired for Nationals by holding brief rehearsals.

Don’t forget to give dancers a short break between Regionals and Nationals.

4. Do recheck all costumes and accessories to make sure they are in top shape.

Don’t have students wear costumes they have never danced in before.

5. Do make sure students project confidence onstage.

Don’t be afraid to be out of your league. You can always learn from people who are better than you.

6. Do try not to let students peak at Regionals.

Don’t put too much pressure on students at Nationals. If they’re having fun, they’ll perform better.
